![]() Bubba Beal's "Spanglish" CASA ME-109, a Spanish-built, Rolls Royce Merlin-powered, Messerschmidt ME-109 that Beal utilized in an Air Show act once too often. The aircraft ground looped into the sage at Stead Airport, Nevada, in 1981, leaving Beal so frustrated that he donated the aircraft immediately to the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California, where it was restored back to flying condition and still flies today! ![]() The end result of the ground collision between Don Whittington's "Precious Metal," Race 38, and Race Director Jerry Duty's Datsun 710, which was inadvertantly left unattended on the taxiway at Stead Airport, Nevada, following the Sunday Gold in 1977. Whittington had passed this photographer's position and from behind, I heard a "Whump, Whump, Whump, Whump, Whump!," turned around to see the highly-polished P-51 stand on it's nose, before coming back down to the taxiway on it's tailwheel. The damage can be seen to the propeller but the aircraft itself survived the incident quite well. Unfortunately, not the case with Duty's Datsun, which can be seen rather sliced and diced in the center of this photo. Whittington was uninjured and the incident was added to Air Racing lore.
